Despite modest global performance, Asia-Pacific carriers posted the strongest air cargo demand growth in June, driven by China's expanding logistics network and rising cross-border e-commerce, reports China Daily.

China launched 20 new international air cargo routes in July, transporting e-commerce goods, electronics, and auto parts. Boeing forecasts China will need 585 new freighters by 2043, nearly tripling its current fleet.

Asia-Pacific airlines saw a 9 per cent year-on-year increase in air cargo demand in June, the highest of any region. Capacity rose 7.8 per cent, said the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

IATA Director-General Willie Walsh noted that while North American traffic fell 8.3 per cent and European growth stagnated, Asia-Pacific bucked the trend. He emphasized the importance of trade stability and digitalization for future growth.

Air freight volumes between Asia and North America declined for seven straight months, while volumes rose between the Middle East and Asia.

The UAE remains China's top Middle East trade partner, with bilateral trade surpassing $100 billion last year.

Etihad Cargo has expanded operations at Ezhou Huahu International Airport, Asia's first dedicated freighter hub, in partnership with SF Airlines. The carrier now offers seven weekly freighter services to meet growing demand.

Luo Guowei of Hubei International Logistics Airport Co Ltd said the partnership will enhance route frequency, overseas warehouse cooperation, and global logistics connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative.
